meet the maker / katherine

This week in our Meet the Makers series we’d love to introduce you to one of our talented seamstresses, Katherine.

Katherine's been with the team for over a decade, and has been perfecting her skills in sewing for over 30 years.

We hope you enjoy learning a little more about her story below.

When did you move to New Zealand?
I moved over from Kuala Lumpar in Malaysia in 1988 with my husband and 3 children. That was 33 years ago, before we had children! Our 3 kids are now 30, 28 and 24.
Do you have family overseas?
My whole family is still overseas. A long time ago they would visit us, but now only we visit them. Before the pandemic I would go back and visit every year.

Where did you learn to work with knitwear?
I learnt how to sew in Malaysia, where I worked in a sewing factory for 15 years. I had no experience with knitwear before I came to New Zealand. I found it easy to get a job when we moved. I knew a friend who had a job for me, and a few days later I started. I had a lot of experience, and it was a busy industry at the time! I really enjoy the job. It’s the one thing I have done my whole life, from young till old. I find it very satisfying.
What do you enjoy doing on the weekend?
Every weekend my husband and I go camping in the Coromandel. It’s just us, as our kids no longer want to join, but we love it.
Thank you for partnering with us in celebrating the hands behind your knits.
