This week in our Meet the Makers series we’d love to introduce you to our Technical Coordinator, Linda.
Linda’s been with the team for over a decade, and is our expert in all-things whole-garment. She plays a crucial role in the link between our Designer and Technicians.
We hope you enjoy learning a little more about her story below.
How did you start in the knitting industry?
My mother and older sister were both keen sewers, which I quickly picked up for myself. At age 9, my sister finally let me use her electronic sewing machine. I started to make clothes for my dolls, myself, even for my friends mums! It really snowballed and by the time I made it to studying at fashion tech, I knew more than the teacher!
Alongside my studies, I took night classes in embroidery and pattern
making which helped me to learn extra techniques. My first couple of jobs in the knitwear industry didn’t last more than 2 years before the companies I was employed by were forced to close; they couldn’t compete with the cheaper garments on the market due to offshore production.
Times were really changing when I entered the industry. It’s great that
people are appreciating the benefits of manufacturing in New Zealand now - moving back to looking for quality garments that last.
What is the most enjoyable part of your role?
I really enjoy the wide scope of tasks I get to do. The analytical,
mathmatical side is something I like. Passing the measurements and specs on to our technicians, and seeing the fit of a garment turn out as you envisioned is very rewarding. I really love working alongside the ladies on the floor too, we’re one big family.
